Rebecca Hall is brilliant in this film that depicts the tragedy of Christine Chubbuck, the local TV newscaster in Florida who commits suicide on air in 1974 just before her thirtieth birthday. I can't really tell you why but the hand-puppet motif--showing Christine at a volunteer job putting on a show for children at a hospital and then, perhaps (we can't tell from the point of view), one for herself alone--is particularly poignant. Michael C. Hall is perfect as the airhead anchor who is her undeserving crush as are Tracy Letts, her bullying boss, and J. Smith-Cameron, her ditsy mother. Hall's husband, Morgan Spector, appears briefly as the gynecologist who gives her bad news about her chances of having children of her own.
